CITY ATTORNEY FEUER CONTINUES CRACKDOWN ON SELLERS OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS


LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced that his office has filed seven additional criminal cases against the sellers of illegal and dangerous fireworks as part of an ongoing coordinated effort between his office, the Los Angeles Fire Department, Port Police and the Department of Street Services. The City Attorney’s Office has coordinated multiple inspections resulting in the confiscation of more than 2,000 pounds of illegal and dangerous fireworks and the filing of eleven criminal cases.

“As we approach the Independence Day holiday, my office will continue to take decisive action against those selling dangerous and illegal fireworks,” said City Attorney Feuer. “Illegal fireworks pose a significant fire danger and a serious safety risk, especially to kids.”

Children under the age of 15 account for 40% of all injuries sustained by fireworks use.

  • Ester Chin, 61, was charged with one count of unregistered fireworks, one count of possession or sale of illegal dangerous fireworks and one count of possession of fireworks in the city of Los Angeles.

  • Eileen Soo Hoo, 79, was charged with three counts of possession of fireworks in the City of Los Angeles.

  • Pik Fan Lam, 54, was charged with one count of unregistered fireworks, three counts of possession of fireworks in the city of Los Angeles.

  • Jose Guadalupe Avalos, 25, was charged with one count of unregistered fireworks, one count of possession or sale of illegal dangerous fireworks, and one count of possession of fireworks in the city of Los Angeles.

  • Juan-Jose Alvarado, 31, was charged with one count of unregistered fireworks, four counts of possession or sale of dangerous fireworks, four counts of illegal possession of dangerous fireworks without a permit, one count of possession of illegal fireworks in the city of Los Angeles, and one count of illegal street sales.

  • Moises Benitez-De La Cruz, 30, was charged with one count of unregistered fireworks, three counts of possession or sale of illegal dangerous fireworks, three counts of possession of dangerous fireworks without a permit, one count of possession of illegal fireworks in the city of Los Angeles, and one count of illegal street sales.

  • Javier Gonzales Ortiz, 25, was charged with one count of unregistered fireworks, two counts of possession or sale of illegal dangerous fireworks, two counts of possession of dangerous fireworks without a permit, one count of possession of illegal fireworks in the city of Los Angeles, and one count of illegal street sales.

Each charge of possession or sale of illegal dangerous fireworks carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and $10,000 in fines.

Each charge of unregistered fireworks carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and $1,000 in fines. All other charges carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail and $1,000 in fines. The charges follow the filing of four similar criminal cases on June 27, 2014 against three fireworks merchants for the sale and possession of dangerous and illegal fireworks.

Arraignment for all defendants is scheduled for August 18, 2014. Assistant City Attorney Patricia Bilgin and Deputy City Attorney Elise Ruden of the Environmental Protection and Justice Unit are prosecuting the cases.
