LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer announced today that his Special Trials Unit has successfully secured a jail sentence and mandatory sex offender registration for Edward Rodriguez, 58, for sexually assaulting an elderly nursing home resident suffering from dementia.

"This conviction underscores our office’s continuing commitment to protecting vulnerable members of our community, including seniors and those living with disabilities," said Feuer. "And it’s significant that the nursing home staff reported this incident to authorities so we could take action. If you see something, say something."

Rodriguez was found guilty on one count of sexual battery and one count of battery against a person in a hospital, following a four-day jury trial. The court sentenced Rodriguez to 364 days in county jail and a requirement to comply with lifetime sex offender registration.

In January 2018, Rodriguez was a resident at a nursing home near MacArthur Park when a certified nursing assistant witnessed him caressing the breasts and kissing the face of a female resident who was sitting alone in the recreation room. The victim was a 77-year-old suffering from advanced dementia.

The victim was immediately separated from Rodriguez, and the nursing home staff called the police who took the defendant into custody.

The case was successfully prosecuted by Assistant City Attorney Richard Kraft, Supervising Attorney of the Special Trials Unit.
