Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr., co-chairs of Prosecutors Against Gun Violence, today released the following joint statement on the shooting in Thousand Oaks:

We are simply heartbroken by the horror last night in Thousand Oaks and the tragic loss – again – of so many young lives. And we send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus, who was set to retire next year, and whose heroic response last night likely saved lives.

With so many killed and injured, there are parents right now desperately trying to locate their college-aged children, while others are coping with grief no family should endure. We implore our nation's lawmakers not to wait one more moment to address the deadly combination of guns and mental illness that continues to shatter so many lives across America.
