I commend the Board of Supervisors for taking the much-needed step of approving almost $10-million in mental health resources for LAUSD students. This allocation couldn’t come at a more important time. The Blue Ribbon Panel on School Safety I convened last year learned that 26% of thousands of LAUSD students screened are at high risk for traumatic stress. Our Panel recommended LAUSD dramatically expand mental health services, and that the School District and the County—which provides mental health services throughout our region—collaborate more closely on this vital issue. Mental health is not only crucial to nearly every facet of students’ lives, it is essential for school safety. The County’s move today is a very encouraging step in the right direction.
