Los Angeles - City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced his office has filed 15 criminal charges against a Sun Valley metal recycler for allegedly failing to properly dispose of hazardous waste on numerous occasions.
"Los Angeles residents deserve to live in a neighborhood free of toxic and hazardous waste, and that is why I filed this lawsuit," said Feuer.
Jose Guadalupe Romero, 33, his business, JGR Metal Recycling Inc., and the property owners of 12278 Branford Street, were each charges with multiple violations of the California Health and Safety Code and the Los Angeles Municipal Code. If convicted, the defendants could face up to 14 years in jail and $510,000 in fines.
The charges come as a result of a joint investigation by the City Attorney's Environmental Justice Unit, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Health Hazardous Materials Division.
Deputy City Attorney Nick Karno is prosecuting the case.
