Our hearts break over the tragic murders in Atlanta and our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. Though we don’t know if ethnicity was a motivator in last night’s shootings, our Asian American Pacific Islander community has, for the last year, faced a dramatic surge of hate and harassment, and I stand with them. We must condemn all acts of hate. Attacks on the API community, from physical assaults to microaggressions, have no place in our society. Beyond the hate, the pandemic has fueled an increase in gun sales and suicides leading to more Americans dying from gun violence in 2020 than during any other year. Our leaders in Washington, D.C. have an historic opportunity to tackle this uniquely American public health crisis. Bolstering background checks, which the majority of Americans support, is an important place to start.
