LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced that his office has successfully secured a conviction and jail sentence against a Hollywood man for physically assaulting his 82-year old mother and a neighbor during a December altercation.
“Elder abuse is an outrage, all the more so when perpetrated by a family member," said City Attorney Feuer. “My office will aggressively prosecute anyone who abuses our City's seniors.”
Gevork Khachatryan, 55, was convicted on four criminal counts including; elder abuse, battery on an elder, battery and criminal threats following a five day jury trial. Khachtryan was sentenced to 30 days in jail as well as 100 hours of community service and 52 Alcoholic Anonymous meetings. The court also issued protective order for the elderly victim and stay away orders from the location of the incident.
Defendant Khachatryan has been the caregiver for his 82 year-old mother at her Hollywood apartment since 2001. On Dec. 2, 2014, a neighbor heard yelling and screaming coming from Khachatryan’s mother’s apartment directly below. After approaching the open door of the apartment, the neighbor witnessed Khachtryan slap his mother with an open right hand on the left side of his face.
After attempting to stop the violence, the neighbor was chased by Khachatryan who threatened him throughout their chase throughout the apartment courtyard. At one point during the altercation with the neighbor, Khachatryan ripped his shirt before he was able to escape. LAPD officers were called and Khachatryan was taken into custody.
The case was successfully prosecuted by Deputy City Attorney Susan Strick of City Attorney Feuer’s Family Violence and Elder Abuse Protection Unit.
