SUPERIOR COURT BLOCKS INITIATIVE TO CREATE LA CITY PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Updated: Feb 12

LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge today blocked an initiative from being placed on the June ballot requiring the City of Los Angeles to create its own public health department.

“Today’s ruling protects the public’s health and saves precious taxpayer dollars from being wasted on a vote on a patently unlawful initiative,” said City Attorney Mike Feuer who filed the City’s suit to block the measure from being placed on the ballot.

In separate lawsuits the City and County of Los Angeles successfully argued that the initiative creating a City public health department would undermine the public’s health and safety and would conflict with state law.

Managing Assistant City Attorney Valerie Flores and Deputy City Attorneys Kimberly Miera and Harit Trivedi successfully litigated the case for the City.
