LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced that his office secured an 18 month jail sentence and lifetime sex offender registration for a 41-year old man for sexually battering a 16-year old girl.
"Children must be protected from sexual abuse," said Feuer. "And my office will fight to hold adults accountable whenever children are victimized. No one is more committed to this cause than Deputy City Attorney Lara Schwartz, who prosecuted this case. I'm very proud of her exceptional advocacy.”
Steven Ray Candler, 41, pled no contest to two criminal counts including sexual battery and false imprisonment. Defendant Candler was sentenced today to three years of probation, 18 months in jail, lifetime sex offender registration, one year of counseling and was ordered to not be alone with underage girls.
In August 2015, Candler, the boyfriend of the victim’s older sister, allegedly entered the victim’s bedroom late at night and sexually assaulted her while she slept. The victim was able to walk to the police station where she was transported to a rape treatment center for exam and swabs. The victim was later taken into custody by officers with the West Bureau Sex Crimes division due to a prior assault by her older sister.
Deputy City Attorney Lara Drino Schwartz successfully prosecuted the case.
