LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced that his office has received the prestigious 2017 Hodson Award from the American Bar Association (ABA) Government and Public Sector Lawyers Division. The Hodson Award, named in honor of the distinguished public service career of the late Major General Kenneth J. Hodson, a former Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Army, recognizes sustained, outstanding performance or a specific and extraordinary service by a government or public sector law office.

"It's extremely gratifying to be the first City Attorney’s Office in the nation to receive this distinguished award," said Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer. "Our team does transformative work on so many issues, from protecting consumers--as with our lawsuit against Wells Fargo over fake accounts--to criminal justice reform, gun violence prevention, community-based efforts to make neighborhoods safer and advance environmental justice and much more. The ABA's recognition inspires us to take our work to yet another level in the days ahead."

At the ABA’s General E. E. Anderson Awards reception on August 11 in New York City, Pauline Weaver, Government and Public Sector Lawyers Division Chair, said, "We are so pleased to honor the nation’s public sector heroes today. The Hodson Award goes to the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer based on the office’s extraordinary achievements in consumer protection, gun violence prevention and criminal justice reform."

The far-ranging breadth and depth of the Los Angeles City Attorney’s responsibilities stand out among America's public law offices and include suing on behalf of Los Angeles, and on behalf of the People of the State of California, and vindicating important public rights in cases that frequently have state or national impact. The office also prosecutes approximately 45,000 misdemeanor cases each year, and has established a wide range of neighborhood-based, restorative justice programs designed to divert low-level offenders from the criminal justice system and reduce recidivism. In addition, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office provides advice to Mayor Garcetti, the City Council, and every department, board and commission on public policy issues with a legal dimension, and drafts all municipal legislation. The office serves as counsel to Los Angeles International Airport, the Port of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and defends the city in civil litigation on matters ranging from police conduct to land use.

The 2017 General E. E. Anderson Awards were presented as part of the ABA’s annual meeting in New York. Among the world’s largest voluntary professional organizations, with over 400,000 members, it is committed serving its members, improving the legal profession, eliminating bias, enhancing diversity and advancing the rule of law throughout the United States and around the world.
