CITY ATTORNEY MIKE FEUER’S WEEKLY MESSAGE ADDRESSES CHILDREN EXPOSED TO VIOLENCE

March 14, 2019

Los Angeles—On the heels of an explosive Los Angeles Times series entitled, “Surrounded,” chronicling the incredible gauntlet confronting many South L.A. students simply trying make their way from home to school safely--in this week’s video message Mike Feuer discusses the trauma experienced by children when they’re exposed to violence, and the devastating impact this trauma can have on brain development. He describes an innovative program his office has developed, through which the City Attorney collaborates with the Childrens’ Institute, LAPD and other partners working to ensure that kids and families exposed to gun violence receive timely crisis intervention and support services.

"When adults fail to protect kids from domestic violence, from gun violence, from gang activity--and then compound that failure by leaving it to the kids to process the socio-psycho consequences of what they have been exposed to—we imperil the future of those kids," said Feuer.
