CITY ATTORNEY MIKE FEUER FILES CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST ASPIRING RAP ARTIST FOR STUNT LEADING TO SHUTDOWN OF DOWNTOWN FREEWAY DURING RUSH HOUR

June 12, 2019

LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced that his office has filed multiple criminal charges against Alexander Dunn, an aspiring rap artist, claiming he caused a serious disruption to the morning rush hour commute by scaling a freeway sign as part of a stunt.

"This outrageous conduct required the intervention of precious emergency services to assure it ended safely, stopped traffic for nearly two hours and interfered with the lives and work of thousands of commuters. We will hold the defendant accountable for his reckless, selfish actions," said Feuer.

Dunn, 30, was charged with five criminal counts including: resisting an officer; causing a public nuisance; two counts of trespassing; and failing to abide by peace officer’s instructions. Dunn faces a maximum of three years in jail and a fine of $3,000 for all charges. Dunn also faces thousands of dollars in restitution for emergency response costs.

Arraignment is scheduled for July 1, 2019 in Department 60 of the Los Angeles Criminal Court.

On June 27, 2018, Dunn, who performs under the stage name Dephree, reportedly scaled the exit sign for the southbound Wilshire Boulevard and Downtown 4th Street off-ramps during morning rush hour. All southbound lanes on the 110 freeway leading into downtown were closed for approximately two hours while Dunn allegedly placed three banners on the signs and began freestyle rapping and yelling to onlookers. The incident was allegedly being filmed for later use in a music video.

As law enforcement approached, Dunn purportedly climbed to the top of the sign and continued to avoid being removed from the structure. After performing one last stunt, Dunn allegedly jumped onto two inflatable mattresses placed under the freeway signs. Dunn was uninjured and taken into custody.

Deputy City Attorney Kevin Dufner is prosecuting the case.
