CITY ATTORNEY MIKE FEUER SECURES 10 YEAR JAIL SENTENCE AGAINST A FORMER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL COACH FOR MOLESTING FEMALE STUDENTS

June 20, 2019

LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that his office has secured  a sentence of more than 10 years in jail against Scott Silva, a former San Fernando Valley high school teacher and girls lacrosse coach, accused of sexual molestation of  underage female students. Silva was convicted on 25 criminal counts last month following a two-week jury trial.

"The young victims in this case showed extraordinary courage by coming forward and reporting these atrocious crimes," said Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer. "I’m gratified the judge imposed this significant sentence, which holds the perpetrator accountable and underscores the significance of his offenses."

Silva, 44, was found guilty on 25 criminal counts including: 16 counts of child molestation, six counts of sexual battery, two counts of lewd conduct upon a child and one count of false imprisonment. On June 19, 2019, court sentenced Silva to 10 years and 230 days in county jail as well as five years of probation and mandatory sex offender registration. A 10 year protective order was also issued for the victims.

Deputy City Attorney Lara Drino of the Family Violence Unit successfully prosecuted the case with the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department Juvenile Division.

Silva was a teacher and girls lacrosse coach at Birmingham Charter Community School in the San Fernando Valley. Between 2016 and 2018, Silva’s conduct with female students ranged from lewd comments to over the clothes touching of private parts to actual skin on skin contact with at least one underage female victim. The school was alerted to the allegations and a report was forwarded to the Department of Children and Family Services and the LAPD for investigation.

Members of the City Attorney’s Office, victim’s advocates, and school officials met with the victims and their parents to offer support and services.

The defendant was arrested at his home in Simi Valley on November 16, 2018 and has remained in custody throughout the trial.
