CITY ATTORNEY MIKE FEUER SECURES ONE YEAR JAIL SENTENCE FOR VALLEY MAN FOR FALSELY IMPRISONING HIS NEIGHBOR WITH A GUN

July 2, 2019

LOS ANGELES – City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced that his office has successfully secured a one-year jail sentence and strict weapons conditions against Dakota Young, a North Hollywood resident accused of holding his neighbor hostage with a gun.

"The defendant’s dangerous conduct put his neighbor in peril—in an incident that could have ended in tragedy. This conviction holds him accountable, and will prevent him from having a firearm for the next decade," said Feuer.

Young, 24, entered a plea of no contest to one count of brandishing a firearm and one count of false imprisonment. The defendant was sentenced to one year in county jail and three years of probation. The court also issued a protective/stay away order for the victim and an order to destroy the gun used in this incident.

As a result of his conviction, Young is now prohibited from owning a firearm for 10 years.

On February 14, 2019, the defendant gained entry into the North Hollywood residence of a female neighbor within his apartment complex while carrying an unloaded 9mm Beretta pistol and a detached 10-round magazine loaded with bullets. Young locked the door to the apartment and refused to let the victim out for approximately 30 minutes.

The victim was eventually able to call the police and was able to exit the apartment, while Young was taken into custody. Officers later searched the defendant’s apartment and found additional ammunition and a 9mm Kel-Tec pistol.

Deputy City Attorney Elin Carlson of the City Attorney’s Gang and Gun Prosecution Section successfully prosecuted the case.
